Lips are one of the most prominent aesthetic features of the face. For a woman, full defined lips with an accentuated border, well defined cupids bow that is in correct proportions with the rest of the face are a sign of health, beauty and youth.
As we age, our collagen production slows down. Lips become thinner, less defined, lose hydration, Cupids bow flattens and becomes less prominent.
Lip Dermal Fillers are used to define the border of the lip, improve hydration of the body of the lip, define the Cupids Bow and increase volume of the lip. Your dentist will be able to assess your requirements and using a series of lip filler injections will provide you with a natural, pouty and youthful look that adheres to the correct facial proportions.
At Mediface we use the best modern techniques to provide you with all your lip filler injections needs in Melbourne.
Lip Augmentation is most suitable:
- If you have naturally thin lips and would like to create more volume, whether it is your upper, lower or both lips
- If you would like to create a more ‘pouty’ appearance
- If you have asymmetries that require correction
- If you want better definition of the lip border
- If you started noticing fine lines and wrinkles extending from the borders of the lips, whether it is due to smoking, ageing or other reasons
- If you noticed your cupids bow has flattened and lost definition
Why choose a Dentist?
Your Dentist is an expert in the field of smile and facial aesthetics. By virtue of our profession, we have intimate knowledge and understanding of the interrelation between your lips, teeth and face. This is particularly true in the area of lip enhancements.
As a dentist, we are able to use our knowledge and ability to give you dental injections that will make your lip enhancement a painless and comfortable experience.
The same way that we consistently help to deliver an attractive smile for our dental patients, we know how to achieve the proportional balance between the upper and lower lip to produce a perfectly symmetrical smile that complements your teeth, gums and unique facial features. Our background in cosmetic dentistry helps us set realistic treatment goals and use non-invasive methods to deliver a natural-looking and attractive smile.
What is the procedure?
Lip Dermal Fillers are a Non-Animal Sourced Hyaluronic acid dermal filler, which is injected into the area that requires correction and enhancement.
During an initial consultation we discuss your goals, likes, dislikes and desired treatment outcomes. We then discuss your medical history, the suggested treatment approach, discuss the consent form and take pre- treatment photographs.
A topical numbing gel is applied to your gums and dental injections are given to completely numb the lip area. If you prefer, a topical anaesthetic cream only can be used for the procedure. If you prefer a combination of dental injections and topical cream, we can also accommodate that. We thoroughly clean and disinfect the lip area to create a clean and safe working environment.
The Lip Dermal filler is then injected in increments until the desired effect is achieved. Post- treatment photographs are then taken and post-treatment instructions are given.
We make you an appointment in 2 weeks to review results.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is it safe?
We use a Non-Animal Sourced Hyaluronic acid dermal filler which is temporary and reversible. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our skin, muscles and connective tissue. Due to its moisturising properties, it is a common ingredient in moisturisers and eye drops. It is broken down by a natural occurring enzyme and hence the effect is only temporary and can be reversed. Being non-animal sourced, it doesn’t require prior skin testing and has effectively no down time.
Part of the appeal of undergoing the treatment at your dentist, can be attributed to the safe and predictable conditions you can expect being treated in a clean and sterile environment and being treated by a qualified clinician.
Like all dental and medical procedures, there is always an element of risk involved that will be discussed with you at the time of consultation.
Am I Suitable?
During the consultation process, we will assess your facial structure and discuss your requirements in order to recommend the treatment that best meets your individual needs.
You may not be suitable for lip fillers if you are allergic or have hypersensitivity to local anaesthetic or hyaluronic acid products. The area to be treated on should be free of inflammation or infection.
Other unsuitable candidates include those who:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are under 18
- Have auto-immune disease
- Have streptococcal disease
- Are taking blood thinners
- Have multiple allergies
What material is used?
Depending on your treatment needs, there are different types of Dermal Filler materials available – short lasting (3-6 months), long lasting (6-12 months) which is available in a thinner consistency for more definition and hydration and more viscous consistency for more volume.
How should I prepare?
We recommend that you should schedule your session at least 2 weeks prior to any special event in your life. This allows most of the possible bruising and swelling to settle and the product to fully integrate into the lip tissue.
You are advised to stop taking the following medications and supplements at least 7 days prior to the treatment:
- Ibuprofen or related NSAIDs
- Fish Oil/Omega-3 fatty acids
- Vitamin E
- Gingko Biloba
- St John’s Wort
On the day of appointment, don’t forget to eat a well-balanced breakfast including food and drink to minimise the chance of dizziness during treatment.
Does it hurt?
As a dentist, we are able to use our knowledge and ability to give you a dental injection that will make your lip enhancement a painless and comfortable experience. If you prefer, a topical anaesthetic cream only can be used for the procedure. If you prefer a combination of dental injections and topical cream we can also accommodate that.
What to expect after my appointment?
Temporary side effects include but are not limited to: swelling, bruising, itching and/or burning. Most patients will be able to see immediate results following their lip filler treatment. However, it takes time for the treatment to fully settle, the filler to fully integrate into the lip tissue and any swelling and bruising to subside – before you can see the final result. It usually takes about 7-14 days to see the final effects of the filler treatment. For optimum results, please follow your cosmetic dentist’s post-treatment care instructions.
What to avoid after my appointment?
In the first 4-6 hours – avoid make-up, exercise or laying down.
In the first 24 hours – avoid exercise, excessive alcohol, facial treatments, rubbing/massaging/manipulating the area, extreme heat/cold (sun/sauna) and air travel
In the first 48 hours – do not take any aspirin, anti-inflammatory or blood thinning medication
In the first 2 weeks – avoid facials, microdermabrasion treatments, laser therapies or liquid nitrogen therapies.
How long will results last?
Results depend on the type of lip fillers used. Short lasting fillers can last between 3-6 months. Long lasting fillers can last between 9-12 months. Duration depends on numerous factors as well as your body’s ability to naturally break down the dermal filler molecules.
