As we get older, our skin loses its moisture, its supple and elastic quality. Its usual cycle of replenishment and healing is delayed and becomes less effective. Chronic sun exposure, smoking, stress, certain environmental and genetic factors all take their toll – resulting in the formation of lines and creases known as wrinkles.
Lines and creases formed by continuous muscle movement – when we smile, frown or make other facial expressions – are known as ‘dynamic’ wrinkles. Left untreated over time, these expression lines get etched into your skin as ‘static wrinkles’.
Anti-Wrinkle Injections are a purified protein solution that when injected into your skin, stops the signal between the nerve and muscle, allowing the muscle to relax. This gives the overlying skin time to recover, through either natural regenerative processes or active resurfacing, while not being impacted my muscle action. Anti-Wrinkle injection treatment is best used as a preventative measure to prevent formation of deep static wrinkles and a safe, effective and non-surgical way to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Anti-Wrinkle injections in Melbourne can help you restore your youthful appearance while still providing natural looking results.

What is the procedure?
During the initial consultation we discuss your goals, likes, dislikes and desired treatment outcomes. We then discuss your medical history, the suggested treatment approach, discuss the consent form and take pre- treatment photographs.
The Anti-Wrinkle Injection procedure involves administering a purified protein solution via a micro-needle just under the skin surface, directly into or around the facial muscles. The relatively pain-free treatment works by blocking the release of the chemical substance that causes muscle contraction responsible for wrinkles.
The procedure normally takes about 15 minutes – with the number of injections varying between different types of wrinkles and treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is it safe?
Anti-Wrinkle injections are injections of a purified protein. Over the last few decades, it has become the most common, non-surgical cosmetic procedure, with millions being treated worldwide annually. It works by blocking the nerve-muscle conduction, forcing the muscle to relax and allowing the overlying skin to heal and dynamic wrinkles to smooth out. The effect usually last around 3-4 months with the muscle regaining full function at the end of this period.
Part of the appeal of undergoing the non-surgical procedure at the dentist can be attributed to the safe and predictable conditions you can expect being treated in a clean and sterile environment and being treated by a qualified clinician.
Like all dental and medical procedures, there are always risk factors involved, which will be discussed with you during your consultation.
Am I Suitable?
Anti-Wrinkle injections are suitable for anyone wanting to soften wrinkles over time. Wrinkles are caused by associated underlying muscle over a period of time, hence usually run perpendicular to the muscle movement. Some of the apparent wrinkles however are not related to muscle movements (eg. sleep lines and skin folds) and will not soften with anti-wrinkle injection treatment. Some of the deeper lines may require a few repeated injections over a period of time to allow them to slowly soften.
During the consultation we will do an assessment of your requirements and recommend the treatment that best meets your individual needs.
You may not be suitable for Anti-Wrinkle Injection treatment if you:
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Are under 18
- Have hypersensitivity to Botulinum Toxin Type A or any other excipients eg. human albumin, sodium chloride
- Have certain neuro-muscular and auto-immune conditions
- Have an infection at the injection site
- Are taking certain medications – especially aminoglycoside antibiotics. For other specific drugs that interfere with treatment, please consult your doctor.
- Are allergic to eggs
What material is used?
Anti-Wrinkle injections are a solution of a purified protein.
How should I prepare?
We recommend that you schedule your Anti-Wrinkle injection treatment at least 2 – 4 weeks prior to any special event in your life. This way, the results from the injections would have fully taken effect and appear as desired.
You are advised to stop taking the following medications and supplements at least 7 days prior to the treatment:
- Ibuprofen or related NSAIDs
- Fish Oil/Omega-3 fatty acids
- Vitamin E
- Gingko Biloba
- St John’s Wort
On the day of appointment, don’t forget to eat a well-balanced breakfast including food and drink to minimise the chance of dizziness during treatment.
Does it hurt?
Any type of injection can hurt. You may feel a little discomfort but generally speaking, the micro needles are so thin that the pain is minimal – most people describe it no more than an “ant bite”. Although typically not required, you may apply anaesthetic cream or cold pack to numb the area prior to the injection.
What to expect after my appointment?
Immediately after the treatment, you may have some swelling, redness and bruising at the injection points, which will subside within the next few hours. Bruising may take a few days, especially if extensive. A headache or flu-like symptoms can occur after treatment. It may take anywhere from 4 days to 2 weeks before any visible results can be seen. We encourage you to come back for an assessment 2 weeks after your initial treatment, at which point further correction or a top-up dose may be required. For optimum results, please follow your cosmetic dentist’s post-treatment care instructions.
What to avoid after my appointment?
In the first 4-6 hours – do not lie down or massage the treated areas and do not use make up.
In the first 48 hours – avoid alcohol, vigorous exercise and exposure to UV and extreme heat eg. sauna, steam, hot showers etc.
In the first 2 weeks – avoid facials, resurfacing treatments and laser treatments
How long will results last?
The effects of Anti-Wrinkle Injections typically last 3-4 months, but they can last longer with ongoing treatment. Duration however varies between individuals.
How do I enhance the result?
There are several things you can do to optimise the results of your Anti-Wrinkle Injection treatment. Since the effects of your treatment will start to wear off within 3-4 months, it is advisable to schedule your Anti-Wrinkle treatments regularly according to that time interval which varies from patient to patient, to maintain the best results going forward.
It is also important to adopt a balanced diet and a healthy skin care regime to make sure that your treated areas are well nourished. It also pays to invest in quality, medical-grade skin care products to keep your skin constantly clean, moisturised, refreshed and protected from the harmful UV rays.
